Political clans and private interests

Political clans and private interests

Cuestión Pública

This research shows how the country's leading political groups' private interests and power networks extend. To show the connections and build a web narrative, we created this platform that includes maps, photographs, and databases transformed into cards of each individual identified in the research. This platform is integrated into the Cuestión Pública domain. The project was chosen as the best digital journalism project in the DML awards, granted by the World Association of News Publishers.

Oversight of Congress through access to information

Oversight of Congress through access to information

Cuestión Pública

This is the first journalistic investigation on the assets and income of Colombian members of Congress, for which we developed the website and data visualizations. Using Datasketch technology, the journalistic reports are connected, money flows are presented, and the immersion of private interests in politics is evidenced. However, the website's primary goal is to facilitate the application of transparency laws, download public information, and better oversight of the legislative branch.

Transparencia por Colombia

This investigative report exposes the relationship between political campaign financing and public contracts. We developed it with Transparencia por Colombia to unveil possible corruption schemes and the incorporation of private parties. To achieve this, we analyzed a large volume of data that provided us with the inputs to write stories and create data visualizations and a web platform to explore them.

Women and Indigenous communities

Agenda Propia

We collected, analyzed and visually communicated the data of this collaborative journalism project that narrates the leadership of indigenous women in the Colombian Amazon. To do so, we developed the web platform where the stories, audiovisual material, graphics and a freely accessible data repository are integrated. The project was a finalist for the Gabo Awards in 2021.

Visualization of electoral data

La Silla Vacía

On the occasion of Colombia's parliamentary and presidential elections in 2022, we created two information systems that were integrated into the media's website. They allow you to filter data by criteria such as region of origin, party or political ideology of the candidate and view live election results.

Canal Capital

For the Colombian presidential elections in 2022, we created a web platform where live results of the electoral count were shown. The platform was input and was broadcasted during the coverage provided by Canal Capital, the public television station in Bogota. It integrates multiple databases that provide context and present a voting history at national, regional, and local levels.

Sentiido

We developed an interactive map with the media Sentiido to compare the situation of trans rights in 19 Latin American countries. The tool shows the relationship between laws on gender identity, change of name, gender marker, regulation of sex work, transfeminicides, and trans people in elected public office.

Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism - CCIJ

We train journalists in data visualization and analysis. We work with international organizations such as the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) network. We also support media outlets to leverage their data, propose investigations based on access to information and create content based on graphics, massive contract search tools, and dashboards.

Memory for the victims of femicide violence

Cuestión Pública

The webspace Ya no estoy aquí, which we developed for Cuestión Pública, presents the stories of victims of femicide during the months of most significant confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Colombia. The space focuses mainly on reconstructing the women's identities, reversing the silence left by the killer by replacing it with anecdotes and memories provided by the victim's family and friends. The platform allows stories to be developed in multimedia format, allows navigation between reports, and presents data visualizations.

We investigated the flow of money and the modification of public procurement requirements related to the purchase of medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reports are part of a regional investigation led by the Latin American Journalists' Network for Transparency and Anti-Corruption (Red Palta).

Revealing salary gaps

Cuestión Pública

Datasketch and Cuestión Pública analyzed more than 356,000 state hospital contracts in Colombia. We found that the wage gap between men and women in the health sector is estimated at 39%. This difference is more than twice the overall wage gap of 12%. The research process involved massive contract collection with a Datasketch application, information processing, reporting, and data visualization. The content, hosted on its own microsite, contains research texts, interviews, and access to data repositories.

Detailing the operation of industries

Red Palta

In this journalistic special, we compile, analyze and release information on milk production in Colombia. We looked into public contracting, the composition of contracting companies, and the actors that profit from this industrial sector. Among the findings is the identification of land buyers from families displaced by the armed conflict to companies of the School Feeding Program that do not comply with what was agreed with the State. The special is part of the regional investigation "The Promised Milk", led by the Latin American Journalists' Network for Transparency and Anti-Corruption (PALTA Network).

Chequeado

We create innovative data-driven content to position issues with low visibility within the media agenda. For example, in 2018 we participated in the "World Cup of Equality", a campaign to inform about the gender gap in the countries participating in the World Cup in Russia. In partnership with Economía Feminista (Argentina) and Fútbol Femenino (Peru), we organized hackathons, data visualization days, and other activities to generate ideas and communication products that will help us expand our message in favor of equality and justice.

Alert and raise awareness

Alert and raise awareness

Datasketch

We raise awareness about crises such as gender-based violence in Latin America through data-driven communication strategies. We incorporate research and citizen advocacy methodologies with public data. By accessing, organizing, and visualizing information, we create content to reinforce messages in favor of justice. Large-format mosaics, composed of data, graphics, and images, allow us to dimension how issues manifest themselves in different contexts.

Access to information for the environment

Datasketch

This special allows all interested people to learn about and connect with 1.2 million public trees planted on Bogotá's roads, parks, river banks, and sidewalks. In this data report, published in 2017, we delve into how trees are organized and designed in the city and expose a harsh reality. No matter how much is planted, trees cannot mitigate the city's environmental footprint. To do so, we analyzed the urban census of tree planting in Bogotá conducted by the Botanical Garden in 2007. In addition, we conducted interviews with environmental experts and forestry engineers that allowed us to understand the city's challenges and release information to the public.

Datasketch

The history and culture that are stored in books can be transformed into digital products that everyone can use. We did that with the Gran Libro de la Cocina Colombiana, published by the Ministry of Culture, which contains information on 700 of the nation's recipes. Through R programming, format conversion, interviews, and programming, we consolidated a multimedia report that invites users to explore the culinary tradition at their leisure. At the same time, we created a tool to identify and develop recipes according to the practices in the regions.

GIZ

We developed an information system to follow up on Ecuador's commitments to the I National Action Plan for Open Government (PAGA). Ayuntamiento de Madrid

In the framework of the GovtechlabMadrid program, in collaboration with Desidedatum we implemented a pilot data science solution to convert the public information of the Madrid City Council into easily accessible knowledge for its citizens. We created a customized tool that allowed workers from different areas to upload datasets, cross-reference them with other users' databases and create visualizations very simply. The tool featured graph recommendation algorithms to quickly transform structured and unstructured data from that entity into content within its web platform.

GIZ

We redesigned Ecuador's Open Data Portal by diagnosing international best practices, user-centered design, and workshops to improve information management and web implementation. The process was based on the pillars of open government, seeking to promote, in a practical way, participation, transparency, and accountability. As a result, the portal has functionalities for public entities to publish their data, and for citizens and civil society to access them.

We strengthen cultural entrepreneurship through training in the use, search, and management of knowledge. Through a series of theoretical and practical workshops, we provide the necessary training for participants to build collaborative networks, content in multiple formats, and a concrete strategy to improve their projects. Alcaldía de Jamundi

We create data communication strategies for local governments to show how public resources were planned and are being invested. For example, within a web page, we explain how social control can be exercised and release information on contracting, including findings such as the agencies that allocate the most contracts, the months with the most bids, and the total amounts. The data that feeds the tools can be downloaded and verified, allowing citizens to make their own visualizations and generate new investigations.
